Funding routes for local-authority depot charging

Councils can access the main depot and vehicle grants, plus sector-specific routes like ZEBRA for buses. Here's the public-sector funding picture.

Local authorities are eligible for the main funding routes and often for sector-specific ones too, so the public-sector funding picture is broad — if you know where to look.

The core routes

Councils can access the Depot Charging Scheme for chargepoints and civils, and vehicle grants toward electric vans and trucks — the same core routes as commercial operators, stacking across infrastructure and vehicles.

Sector-specific routes

Where you run buses, ZEBRA is the dedicated door, accessed with your transport authority role. Other public-sector or air-quality funding streams may apply depending on your services and location — worth scoping alongside the national schemes.

Plan for the gaps

As everywhere, grid reinforcement and much of the vehicle cost sit outside the grants. Public projects can be large and multi-site, so map these unfunded costs deliberately into your capital planning.

Readiness matters more at scale

Because council projects are often bigger and involve several sites and stakeholders, being application-ready before a window opens is especially valuable — site details, quotes and plans assembled in advance so you can move promptly. Confirm current terms on the Funding tracker, check eligibility with the Grant Eligibility Checker, and remember procurement of the funded works must still run through your compliant frameworks.
